Get to Know Russell Turner

As Senior System Manager, Russell Turner improves Saber Data’s IT systems security and technology asset performance, which requires him to constantly problem-solve and develop creative solutions to sudden and complex challenges. As an essential part of the team and the TyRex Technology family, Russell is everyone’s first call when a glitch is uncovered in the system. His unwavering support and technical expertise make him an invaluable resource,
with plenty more to get to know.

Hey, Russell! Tell us about yourself – What’s your background? Where have you worked previously?

I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Biological Science from Morehouse College and gained experience in biomedical research at Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio before serving in the U.S. Army as a mechanic. Later, I managed a materials science lab at a local startup called Molecular Rebar Design. I began my IT career managing a PC hardware department before moving into systems and network administration. I subsequently worked for IT and cybersecurity management services provider, Integritek, where I provided both remote support and on-site technical services. In that role, I gained exposure to hundreds of technological and professional environments, including medical facilities, schools, legal and financial institutions, artistic and graphic design companies, and many others.

You’ve been a key member of the team for over four years, supporting many of our IT and software development projects. What excites you about IT and software development? Could you share a few highlights you’ve experienced here at Saber Data and as a member of the TyRex Family?

What I enjoy most about IT is that the role is inherently devoted to problem-solving. The problems are objective and measurable, as are the solutions, requiring reasoning and creativity with attention to detail. A strong component of my work is supporting end users. Everyone has a different level of technical experience and different professional needs, so I must adjust how I communicate with each person. That flexibility helps build trust, create rapport and solve problems in a way that has a real impact. The human connections I make every day here are one of the most rewarding parts of the role.

What technical specialties are you putting into your work? Are there any specific areas of focus or expansive projects that you’re working on right now?

My main focus day-to-day is ensuring people can use their computers effectively and work with minimal friction. The technology environment is constantly changing, especially when it comes to security and system stability, even if most users do not see those changes directly. I rely most on my knowledge of networking, security, and software functionality, particularly software used by TyRex end-users for testing, production, and CAD/modeling.

One project that I’m currently working on with the Saber Data team includes deploying tools that help us keep pace with the broader technology environment. Particularly with emerging risks related to what is commonly referred to as “AI,” which is essentially a range of advanced machine learning tools made accessible to the public.

Most everyone has a computer and knows how to use it, but not many understand the complexity of the technology that powers it. As an industry professional, could you tell us what you think the average person would like to know about your line of work?

The question I get the most is, “How did you know how to do that?” My answer is typically one of the following: “I’ve seen it a thousand times” or “I had to learn it just now.” This line of work requires lifelong learning. At times the role is cognitively intense and other times it relies heavily on detailed record-keeping.

At TyRex, we like to say: “We work hard, we play hard, and we continuously foster a caring culture for our employees.” So, when you’re not developing our customers’ software technology here, what hobby do you most enjoy outside of the facility?

Outside of work, my favorite hobbies are strength training and running. I believe in staying active for life and encouraging friends and family to do the same.
